Supported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and hosted by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Automotive Sub-Council, with participation from the Wuhan Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the 2023 China International Commercial Vehicle Show (CCVS) grandly opened on November 8 in Hall B of the Wuhan International Expo Center. Vice Mayor Wang Yuancheng and Deputy Secretary-General Yao Qing of the Wuhan Municipal People's Government attended the opening ceremony. During his inspection of the exhibition, Vice Mayor Wang emphasized, "It is necessary to thoroughly implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech and fully recognize the significance and catalytic role of the exhibition economy. Local organizers in Wuhan, including the Municipal Council for the Promotion of International Trade, should actively collaborate with the main hosts to jointly elevate the commercial vehicle show to a high standard and expand its influence."
2023 marks a pivotal year for implementing China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, building a new development paradigm, advancing high-quality growth, and embracing innovative development concepts. Centered on the theme "New Concepts, New Patterns, New Demands," this year’s CCVS spans 60,000 square meters and is expected to attract over 50,000 professional visitors. The showstopper lineup includes 33 global debut models and 39 domestic premier vehicles. Notably, new energy vehicles have for the first time matched traditional fuel-powered models in quantity, with low-carbon, zero-carbon, intelligent, and energy-efficient technologies dominating exhibitors’ themes. Intelligent products took center stage, as forward-looking concept vehicles showcased the latest advancements in China’s commercial vehicle industry. New energy commercial vehicles featuring diverse technological pathways—electric, hydrogen engines, fuel cells, hybrid, and LNG—made a collective debut. Leading specialized vehicle manufacturers participated at scale, collaborating closely with OEMs. The number of component suppliers surged by 40%. Innovations in smart technologies, new energy solutions, and the adoption of China VI-b emission standards permeated every segment of the commercial vehicle supply chain, from chassis and specialized vehicles to components. The exhibition also highlighted transformative trends in commercial vehicle technology, product evolution, competitive dynamics, industrial ecosystems, and development models. Dedicated to advancing rural revitalization, this year’s show expanded its cold chain logistics zone, displaying refrigerated trucks, related components, and real-world operational scenarios. Concurrent events included the 5th Green Cold Chain Sustainable Development Summit ("Cold Chain Summit"), the unveiling and awards ceremony for the China Truck of the Year (CTOY 2024), the 2023 Logistics and Transport Vehicle Summit, and the 2023 International Forum on Specialized Vehicle Industry Development.
According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China’s commercial vehicle exports hit a historic high of 580,000 units in 2022, marking a 44.9% year-on-year increase. Heavy-duty truck exports, in particular, have driven the industry’s global expansion, with growth exceeding 70% in the first nine months of 2023. Projections suggest annual heavy-duty truck exports could surpass 300,000 units within two years. New energy commercial vehicle sales also surged, reaching 197,600 units from January to September 2023—a 60.63% increase year-on-year. Notably, new energy logistics vehicles (excluding heavy trucks and pickups) accounted for 173,200 units, up 30.1%. The penetration rate of new energy commercial vehicles (excluding microvans) rose to 9.3% in the first three quarters, surpassing 2022’s full-year level, with September’s rate climbing to 13.84%.
Despite challenges such as economic slowdown, weakened demand, and industrial transformation, China’s commercial vehicle sector has demonstrated resilience under the "dual-carbon" goals. Innovations in electrification, intelligence, and digitization are accelerating, complemented by robust export performance. After a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the 2023 CCVS marks a symbolic revival in Wuhan. The event not only showcased cutting-edge technologies, products, and strategies but also highlighted the industry’s unwavering commitment to sustainable and intelligent development. Exhibitors’ displays reflected the sector’s strategic focus on aligning with national policies and pioneering future-oriented solutions.
As China’s sole national-level commercial vehicle exhibition, CCVS has established a biennial collaborative mechanism with Germany’s IAA Hanover—the world’s largest and oldest commercial vehicle show—alternating between Wuhan (odd years) and Hanover (even years). Since its Wuhan debut in 2012, CCVS has grown into Asia’s premier specialized exhibition. The 2023 edition injects renewed confidence into the industry, heralding a promising recovery and a bright future for China’s commercial vehicle market.
